One Trick for Flying with the Family that Makes Everything Easier

You’ve decided to travel for the holidays. Good for you! (said with only a tiny bit of sarcasm) It’s so nice to be around family and friends you don’t get to see all the time. Whether you are excited about it or dreading it, every parent knows that travelling with kids is not easy.

Our oldest was 6 weeks old when she took her first flight home for the holidays. I begrudgingly agreed to it after weeks of pressure from family “wanting to see the baby”. I was grumpy and terrified and had no idea how to travel with an infant, much less a whole family! It’s so intimidating. Since then, we’ve taken dozens of trips with our kids and I’ve learned one simple trick that makes it so much easier!

Curbside check-in

You’re thinking, “That’s it?” But let me explain. With winter travel and two kids in tow, we’ve got 2 large suitcases, one stroller, two carseats,  and two carry on backpacks/diaper bags. And coffee, must have coffee.

Usually by the time I get to the airport, I’m already about as stressed as I can be. It’s been days of planning, laundry, and packing. Double checking the list and making sure we don’t forget anything. Inevitably, someone has a meltdown, a blowout, or gets carsick on the way to the airport and I start to think we should just turn around and go home! But this blog is about getting out and having adventures!

how it works, how it helps.

So here’s the nitty gritty of how curbside check in turns all that around. This method works best if you have two adults or are taking a rideshare to the airport.

  1. Pull Up to your Airline’s Curbside Check-In. At DEN: United, American, and Southwest are available.
  2. Leave kids in car and unload all baggage, strollers, and carry-on bags in front of the counter. The staff will ask for your reservation and id and start the check-in process.
  3. Get kids and carseats out of the car. Strap them into the stroller or front carrier while the staff checks in the car seats.
  4. Get boarding passes from the staff. Tip generously, it’s worth it! Make sure you have your purse/diaper bag.
  5. Have your partner go park the car and take any other carry-on bags with them.
  6. You’re free to stroll right through security with only the kids, and one diaper bag, and possibly a stroller. And coffee, must have coffee!

Pro Tip:  If your airport has Clear (Denver Does) you can skip to the front of the TSA line. It’s currently $179 for first adult and $50 for each additional adult per year. Kids under 18 are free! This post is not sponsored but you can learn more at https://www.clearme.com/
