Big Easy Trailhead in Clear Creek Canyon

Wow! Big Easy Trailhead is a gem for families with little kids. We’ve been here so many times, we can’t count. Why? Because it’s a 15 minute drive into Clear Creek Canyon from Golden, but you feel as if you are well into the mountains with Clear Creek rushing by, high red cliffs, and evergreen trees around and an easy paved trail.

Big Easy trailhead has everything a family could possibly want. Plenty of parking (54 spaces to be exact), vault bathrooms, covered picnic tables and it provides access to 3.9 miles of the Peak to Plains Trail. This ongoing trail project of Jefferson County Open Space and partners will eventually connect Golden to Idaho springs with a 10’ wide paved, ADA accessible concrete trail.

This makes it the perfect place to take kids for short walks, longer stroller rides, or even bike rides. There is also water access to dip your toes in or go fishing. The boardwalks and trails have good rails so you never have to worry about your little one slipping into the water or walking out onto US Highway 6. Our latest visit, we tried out Eleanor’s new bike and had a picnic in one of the pavilions.

hike description

You walk easy a little ways from the parking lot passing the bathrooms, water access, boardwalks and picnic pavilions along the way until you get to a beautiful bridge that crosses Clear Creek, where it connects to the Peaks to Plains trail. You can then continue on for 3.5 miles on the south side of the river in the western direction.

Because it is paved the entire way, it is very stroller friendly. In the summer, it isn’t too hot because it is mostly shaded. In the winter, if it has snowed recently, there will often still be snowpack or ice on the trail south of the river. So come prepared with microspikes or yaktrax if you think there may be snow.
